RV Trip Planning with Google Maps: Campgrounds to PDF and Excel

Planning an RV trip usually means keeping track of campground listings, reservation emails, and places saved in Google Maps. A spreadsheet gives you room to record dates, site numbers, and vehicle limits alongside each campground. You can also save a PDF with addresses and contact details on your phone.

This guide covers RV trip planning with Google Maps and ExportMyMap, using Mather Campground at Grand Canyon and Watchman Campground at Zion as examples. Start with a saved list, export it to Excel, and add the details you need for your itinerary.

Does Google Maps have an RV mode?

Google Maps has no dedicated RV mode. Google describes its driving directions as designed for cars. For a motorhome or travel trailer, use an RV trip planner that accepts your vehicle dimensions, such as RV LIFE Trip Wizard, and follow the campground's arrival instructions.

Google Maps is useful for finding camping options, reading reviews, and saving stops. ExportMyMap exports your saved places to Excel, PDF, and other formats.

Find and save campgrounds in Google Maps

Search by area: “RV campgrounds near Grand Canyon South Rim” or “camping near Zion National Park.” Open the campground's own website or reservation listing to check the specific site.

The reservation pages list these details:

  • Mather Campground, Grand Canyon: Recreation.gov lists a 30-foot maximum for motorhomes or trailers, no hookups, and reservations up to six months ahead. Only certain sites accommodate a 30-foot trailer. Site 185, for example, lists a pull-through driveway and a 30-foot equipment limit.
  • Watchman Campground, Zion: its reservation page identifies loops A and B as electric sites suitable for RV camping, with no full hookups. Standard sites become bookable up to six months ahead. The A027 site listing specifies a back-in space, 30-amp electricity, and a 55-foot equipment limit. That campsite allowance is separate from Zion's road restrictions: oversized rigs staying at Watchman must approach through the South Entrance in Springdale.

These details were checked on September 18, 2026. Check live alerts before booking: Mather's listing also carried temporary water restrictions affecting restrooms, drinking-water taps, and showers.

To save your candidates, open Saved → New list on desktop Google Maps and name it Arizona and Utah RV trip. Find each campground, click Save, and choose the list. Google's list instructions explain sharing and collaboration, too.

Add backup RV parks, dump stations, propane stops, groceries, and laundry. Use list notes for reminders such as “check site 185 dimensions.”

Export your campground list to Excel

  1. Install ExportMyMap from the Chrome Web Store and open Google Maps in desktop Chrome.
  2. Launch the extension, select your saved list, and wait for the scan.
  3. Review the results. Deselect duplicates and unwanted stops; check Include your notes before sharing.
  4. Click Excel to download an XLSX workbook, then open it in Excel or import it into Google Sheets.

The export can include names, addresses, coordinates, phones, websites, ratings, and Google Maps links, depending on available data and your field selection. The Excel export guide explains the workbook options.

An RV campground spreadsheet template

Add these planning columns beside the exported place details:

ColumnWhat you enter
Arrival / departureThe nights you intend to stay
Site number and fitSpecific site, length allowance, pull-through or back-in
HookupsVerified electric service, water, and sewer
Booking statusConsidering, contacted, or confirmed
Total costStay cost including fees
Cancellation deadlineDate and time from your booking terms
Source / checked dateReservation URL and when you reviewed it

For Mather, put the site-specific link beside the campground's Maps URL. For Watchman, record the electrical service offered by your chosen site. If you're comparing two sites at the same campground, duplicate its row and enter a different site number in each.

Sort the sheet by arrival date and filter for confirmed stays to review your itinerary. Keep unbooked options in the sheet in case you need to change a stop. Before sharing a copy, remove confirmation numbers and gate codes.

Prepare a campground PDF and offline maps

Back in ExportMyMap, select the stops you've chosen, name the export, and click PDF. Save the file on your phone and open it before leaving to check which addresses, contact details, and notes it includes. You can read those details offline. Choose Print List for a paper copy; the PDF guide covers both buttons.

Can I use Google Maps offline on an RV trip?

Download your map areas separately. In the Google Maps mobile app, open your profile menu, choose Offline maps → Select your own map, and download the relevant area. Google's offline instructions explain that driving directions work when the entire route is covered. Traffic information and alternative routes are unavailable offline.

What the export contains: ExportMyMap exports the available Google Maps place details. You'll need to look up campsite availability, bookings, hookups, and vehicle limits yourself. Keep a copy of your completed spreadsheet alongside the PDF, since spreadsheet edits aren't included in that file.

If you use GPX, the export contains individual waypoints for places with coordinates. You'll need to calculate the route between them in your navigation app or device. Check device compatibility in the Garmin guide.

Share your road trip shortlist

Google Maps' shared lists work well while everyone is adding ideas. For selected stops, an ExportMyMap Share Link opens in a browser without the extension. The PDF and exported link are snapshots, so create a fresh copy when plans change.

To display campgrounds and service stops on separate map layers, follow the Google My Maps import guide. The travel planning example shows a shared guide you can open to see how the place details appear.

RV trip planning questions

How many stops can I add to a Google Maps route?

Google documents nine stops, including the final destination, plus your starting point: ten locations if you count the start. That directions limit is separate from your saved list. For a longer road trip, organize your itinerary into daily driving legs.

Can I export my campground list for free?

Yes. Try a small campground selection first to check the workbook and PDF before preparing your full trip. See current pricing for the free place and list limits; you'll need a paid plan for exports beyond those limits.
